Spring Cleaning the Capital

Spring Cleaning the Capital Hosted By Gaia’s Garden

What is Cleaning the Capital?

The GLAD Cleaning the Capital campaign is a citywide cleanup that occurs in the spring and fall of every year. Residents come together as a community and combine efforts to make our city clean and green.

This Year Soungui Fitness and I hosted our first Community Clean up with the help of this campaign.

In just two hours, we each collected a trash bag filled with garbage. Plastic wrappers, food containers and plastic straws were the most common things that we found while cleaning.

It felt great to be able to clean up an area right around the corner from us.

This school yard / park / stream looked like a much ore suitable space for children to play in afterwards.

2019 marks the 26th year of the GLAD Cleaning the Capital campaign! The annual cleanup campaign first began in 1994 as a springtime cleanup. In 2006, due to the spring campaign's overwhelming success an annual fall cleanup was added. Since 1994, more than one million volunteers have participated in more than 20,000 cleanup projects throughout the city. As a result, an estimated 1,000,000 kilograms of waste has been removed from our public spaces.

It felt wonderful to be able to make this positive impact on our community, and in turn be apart of an even greater impact.

Thank you for everyone who came out to Cleaning the Capital. Soungui and I are very excited to continue arranging these community clean ups. We will be hosting a clean up every two weeks within the Ottawa / Kemptville / Gatineau areas. If you are interested in joining, please send us a quick message. If you would like to suggest a next location for one of our clean ups, please do, we are currently looking for new locations that may need extra love and attention from us.
